Issues to Consider
When Discussing Code Status
This one-hour talk will delve into the origins of resuscitation of patients dying “in the field” as well as dying in acute care facilities. We will examine how American society has arrived at its current coding practices and discuss the ethical and legal dilemmas that surround resuscitation and withholding resuscitation. Discussants will also consider instances where resuscitation is not a reasonable treatment option and should not be offered as a treatment option. Lastly, we will provide valuable guidelines for having an effective code status discussion with patients and families. This information will be valuable for anyone dealing with end-of-life issues and anyone having sensitive goals of care discussions.
